Commonly Accepted Potential Solutions:

For immediate relief, doctors can administer mannitol intravenously to alleviate the symptoms.  Mannitol should be administered within 72 hours of ciguatera intoxication. While mannitol treatment seems to work partly by "flushing" the body of ciguatoxin, it causes dehydration, so any patient on mannitol infusion must be carefully monitored.

Recent research indicates that an anti-oxidant therapy program can help alleviate the symptoms of Chronic Ciguatera Poisoning.  Chronic Ciguatera Poisoning is a condition wherein a patient can suffer for years with continued neurological challenges resulting from an episode of ciguatoxin poisoning.  For these patients, it is recommended that a complete medical exam be performed to rule out any other cause of illness.  This therapy includes Vitamin B, C, and Beta-Carotene.

For possible diagnosis of Chronic Ciguatoxin Poisoning, Dr. Shoemaker offers an at home, vision based neurological test. Information can be found at http://www.chronicneurotoxins.com.

Another valuable website is hosted by Dr. Donna Blythe.  Based in Florida, Dr. Blythe tracks much of the ciguatoxin research and maintains an excellent database on the subject.  Her website is http://www.rehablink.com/ciguatera/
